Gartner expects 60% of organizations to adopt smaller engineering teams by 2029 as AI reshapes work.
Per Gartner research, 60% of organizations expect to adopt smaller software engineering teams by 2029, up from 15% today, reflecting how AI is transforming engineering rather than eliminating jobs.
As AI agents handle routine technical tasks, engineers gain capacity for problem-solving, code quality oversight, and managing AI outcomes. Smaller teams of four or five will blend product managers, UX/agent-experience designers, and AI-native engineers.
Analyst Aliyah Camacho calls it a restructuring to best combine AI and human expertise, not cost-cutting. Three-quarters of engineering leaders expect headcounts to stay stable or grow, though slower junior hiring could create long-term talent and knowledge-transfer challenges.
