Why AI Storage Standards Matter for Enterprise AI Infrastructure
HighFens, Tuesday, July 7th, 2026
SNIA's open storage standards make storage a first-order AI design decision that cuts GPU idle time.
Storage performance is critical to AI infrastructure yet gets less attention than GPU optimization, a gap SNIA addresses through open standards benefiting vendors and customers.
Its StorageAI framework (launched August 2025, 15 founding vendors including Dell, IBM, and NetApp) coordinates memory tiering, data movement, storage efficiency, and latency. SDXI enables efficient memory-to-memory movement across CPUs, GPUs, and DPUs, while direct-to-GPU object storage paths reduce CPU involvement for KV cache movement and checkpointing.
Standardized liquid cooling supports high-density SSDs, and AI-specific benchmarks replace traditional metrics that don't reflect real workloads.
