CIOs Need to Make AI Sovereignty a Key Strategy

AI sovereignty now spans the full lifecycle, and CIOs must prioritize data governance and lineage.
Greg Statton argues AI sovereignty has expanded from data residency to end-to-end control over data lineage, model training, inference, and infrastructure.
As boards prioritize AI for productivity, data security and sovereignty have become critical challenges. Organizations adopt hybrid strategies, placing lower-risk apps like HR copilots on public cloud while keeping sensitive workloads like source code in sovereign environments.
Countries such as Japan and South Korea are building localized AI infrastructure and boutique ecosystems for regulatory and language needs. CIOs should focus on data governance, labeling, and lineage, while emerging encrypted-data processing may later enable secure use of hyperscaler infrastructure.
