Introducing Meerkat: An Experiment in Global Consensus
Cloudflare, Wednesday, July 8th, 2026
Cloudflare Research unveils Meerkat, an experimental global consensus service built on the QuePaxa algorithm.
Cloudflare Research developed Meerkat, a distributed consensus service powered by the QuePaxa algorithm, designed to manage control-plane state across its 330+ global data centers.
Unlike leader-dependent systems like Raft, all replicas can perform writes at all times and progress is never halted by a timeout, making it better suited to wide-area networks with unpredictable latency. The system guarantees strong consistency and fault tolerance while remaining available even when individual machines or links fail.
Meerkat is currently experimental and will remain internal-only for the near future.
