Shielding the Patch Gap: The Exploit Doesn't Wait for Patch Tuesday

The New Stack, Saturday, October 31st, 2026

AI-accelerated exploits shrink the patch window; the article argues eBPF runtime shielding such as Cilium Tetragon can act as a compensating control.

Vulnerable Log4Shell instances still turn up four years on, and AI-assisted exploit research may shorten the time between disclosure and attack.

The article argues patching is necessary but not sufficient because the patch gap is set by scanning, testing and change management.

It proposes eBPF-based runtime shielding, such as Cilium's Tetragon, as a compensating control that observes and enforces policy on process, network and file activity at the kernel level without changing applications.

Such controls would run alongside remediation in the vulnerability management cycle rather than at the network edge.
