What AI Cybercrime Exercises Reveal About Collective Defense

Fortinet, Friday, October 30th, 2026

Fortinet's Derek Manky shares lessons from three tabletop exercises with UC Berkeley's CLTC on AI-enabled cybercrime and crisis decisions.

The exercises were run by the AI-enabled Cybercrime Initiative, a collaboration among Fortinet, UC Berkeley's Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity, the Berkeley Risk and Security Lab and others.

A central finding is that teams may recognize an attack yet remain unsure who can authorize action, what can be shared, or when to inform customers and partners, and attackers' speed makes those gaps worse.

Manky helped lead the Singapore exercise and points to a companion CLTC analysis on governance challenges.

He argues shared research and practitioner involvement strengthen collective defense, and previews the next step in the initiative.
