Simplifying .NET Toolchain Installs With dotnetup
InfoWorld, Thursday, October 29th, 2026
Microsoft's preview dotnetup tool, described as a rustup for .NET, installs and manages .NET SDKs and runtimes across operating systems.
Simon Bisson reviews dotnetup, a public preview command-line tool that installs .NET SDKs, runtimes and platform tooling on Windows, macOS and Linux.
It installs per user without elevated privileges and supports separate installation roots, so different .NET versions can run side by side, isolated from the machine-wide runtime.
An interactive mode lets users choose channels such as latest or LTS, install specific versions and remove old ones, and it supports automation, including sample GitHub Actions YAML.
As a preview it lacks support for some runtimes and extensions such as Aspire and has no editor integration yet.
