Rethinking the Blind-Mate Connection
Data Center Knowledge, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026
Pivoting blind-mate couplings aim to give liquid-cooled servers higher coolant flow, compact size and better tolerance of misalignment.
This Data Center Knowledge industry perspective by Todd Lambert describes the pivoting blind-mate coupling (PBMC), a connection design for liquid-cooled servers developed within the Open Compute Project ecosystem.
Rack and server designers need connections that carry more coolant flow, fit shrinking tray space and tolerate misalignment during installation and removal.
Because blind-mate connections are joined without a technician guiding them, PBMCs offer more self-alignment, and they pair a larger flow path with a compact package.
The article notes high flow can cause seal washout, requiring retention features, cites Parker Hannifin's BQC Series as an example and says PBMCs are most relevant in server-tray and blade systems.
