Preparing for a Quantum-Safe Future
TechRadar, Monday, October 26th, 2026
Fortinet's Dave Spillane argues organizations must start preparing for post-quantum cryptography now because of harvest-now, decrypt-later attacks.
In a TechRadar Pro opinion piece, Dave Spillane, systems and engineering director at Fortinet, warns that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could break widely used public-key encryption such as RSA and ECC.
Although the date of such a breakthrough is uncertain, attackers are already collecting encrypted data to decrypt later, putting long-lived sensitive information at risk today.
He recommends starting with a cryptographic audit to find exposed data and systems, then planning migration using NIST's post-quantum cryptography standards.
Quantum key distribution is noted as an option for specialized high-value uses.
