How CIOs Can Set the Pace for Cybersecurity Resilience

CIO Dive, Monday, October 26th, 2026

Protiviti's Scott Laliberte argues CIOs and CISOs must speed up vulnerability, identity and data governance as AI accelerates attacks.

In a CIO Dive guest opinion piece, Protiviti managing director Scott Laliberte argues that AI is speeding up the discovery and exploitation of vulnerabilities while many organizations still rely on slower patching and incident response processes.

He urges using AI defensively earlier in the software lifecycle, extending identity governance to AI agents and other nonhuman identities, and tightening data governance and asset inventory.

He says CIOs and CISOs should share ownership of vulnerability management, development and recovery.

Citing Protiviti's survey, he notes only 22% of organizations reported high confidence across three resilience dimensions, with cyber threats the top near-term risk.
