Beware the Slasher: AI Could Kill Off Cybersecurity Pros' Skills

Dark Reading, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026

Kudelski Security's Nathan Hamiel warns that over-reliance on AI tools could erode the core technical skills security pros need to use them well.

Dark Reading interviews Nathan Hamiel, senior director of research at Kudelski Security, ahead of his Black Hat India keynote on the death of skills.

He argues that tools have long turned hands-on security operators into hands-off monitors, and AI automation is accelerating that shift.

Without strong fundamentals, practitioners may not spot when AI output is wrong, and automating junior tasks removes the ways newcomers learn.

He sees recent rogue AI incidents as exposing basic hygiene failures rather than an apocalypse, and recommends applying AI to suitable tasks such as threat hunting, threat intelligence and penetration testing while preserving expertise.
