BigQuery to Databricks: A Strategic Framework

Databricks, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026

Databricks outlines a phased framework for migrating from Google BigQuery to the Databricks Lakehouse.

Databricks presents a framework for migrating from Google BigQuery to its Lakehouse, organized around Process, Technology and People pillars.

The process runs through assessing the estate, choosing an entry point, migrating, validating in dual operation and decommissioning, with the open-source Lakebridge toolkit's BigQuery profiler automating discovery.

Teams can go BI-first to rebuild heavily used dashboards or ETL-first to consolidate transformation workloads on Photon and Spark.

Databricks recommends migrating in waves ranked by business value and complexity rather than a big-bang cutover.
