Amazon Neptune Now Supports Online Index Rebuild to Reclaim Storage

AWS, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026

Amazon Neptune Database now supports online index rebuild to defragment indexes and reclaim storage without downtime.

Amazon Neptune Database now supports online index rebuild, which defragments indexes and reclaims unused storage while the database stays online.

Inserts, updates, and deletes leave gaps in data pages that keep storage usage high after data is removed, raising I/O costs and slowing Gremlin, openCypher, and SPARQL queries.

Reads and writes continue on the writer and read replicas during a rebuild, and users can target all indexes, quad indexes, or dictionary indexes while tuning concurrency and write buffer size.

The feature requires engine release 1.5.0.0 or later on provisioned writer instances, in all Regions where Neptune Database is available.
