VMware VDDK Disappears: What CSPs and MSPs Can Do Now
VMblog, Thursday, October 22nd, 2026
After Broadcom quietly pulled VMware's VDDK library, Platform9 explains alternative VM migration methods for service providers.
In September, Broadcom pulled VMware's Virtual Disk Development Kit without notice, and the VDDK underpins many backup, DR and migration tools, including tools used to move off VMware.
Most cloud providers will also lose access to the VMware Cloud Service Provider program in March 2027.
In this VMblog Q&A, Platform9 co-founder Sirish Raghuram, whose company sells migration tooling, describes three migration methods in its vJailbreak tool: VDDK-based, proxy-assisted and storage-assisted.
He says the storage-assisted method, built with Pure Storage, Hitachi Vantara, NetApp and Tintri, can clone a 250GB disk in four seconds.
