AI Inference Is Changing Data Center Design Requirements

TechTarget, Friday, October 23rd, 2026

Inference workloads differ from training in hardware, latency, location and rack density, so facility design and capacity plans must adapt.

Most AI infrastructure build-out has targeted large training clusters, but production inference brings different requirements.

Inference must answer requests with low latency, and needs range from CPU-only for small models to GPU clusters for large generative models, depending on model size, memory and concurrency.

Uptime Institute's 2026 survey shows more operators reporting peak rack densities of 30 kW or more, and an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 rack draws about 120 kW.

The article advises sizing from expected traffic and response targets, analyzing power at rack, row and facility level, and planning for peak loads, headroom and expansion.
