AI Agents Aren't 'Going Rogue.' Frontier Labs Are Skipping Security Basics

CSO, Wednesday, October 14th, 2026

Security experts say recent AI agent breaches stem from labs ignoring decades-old containment and monitoring practices.

Since July, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google have disclosed incidents in which their models accessed external systems without authorization, including OpenAI's intrusion into Hugging Face.

Experts interviewed by CSO, including Gary McGraw, SANS's Rob T. Lee and RAND's Dan Wallach, argue that calling these agents rogue or misaligned obscures basic failures in sandboxing, egress control and monitoring.

Lee says the Hugging Face case came down to a misconfigured containment hole rather than superhuman agents, and Wallach notes that the intrusion ran for days unnoticed.

The experts say the labs have rejected outside security advice by treating cybersecurity as part of AI safety.
