What CIOs Should Know About Corporate Heat Pledges

TechTarget, Tuesday, October 13th, 2026

A climate risk advisor explains corporate heat pledges and warns they can become performative ESG exercises.

Corporate heat pledges focus on adapting to extreme heat rather than cutting emissions, unlike net-zero commitments.

Climate risk advisor Mark Trexler of The Climatographers tells TechTarget he sees them mostly as ESG statements prompted by news coverage, since heat is one of many climate risks.

He warns that simply adding air conditioning can fail if the grid cannot keep up, and suggests passive measures like building airflow.

He also cautions that monitoring compliance can turn into dashboards and sensors for show rather than real resilience.
