Users Only Notice Great Infrastructure When They Don't Notice It at All

Platform Engineering, Monday, October 5th, 2026

Good platform work is invisible to users, which skews budgets and careers toward incident response over prevention.

This contributed piece on PlatformEngineering.com describes the anticlimax of platform work, where weeks of effort can cut p99 latency from 1.8 seconds to 240 milliseconds and the only reward is a flattening graph.

Users never experience infrastructure, only waiting or not waiting, and Jakob Nielsen's 0.1-, 1- and 10-second response limits still describe human attention.

Because outages produce postmortems and headlines while a clean quarter produces nothing, teams get headcount after incidents rather than before, and engineers who prevent failures are less visible than those who heroically fix them.
