Navigating Open Source Governance in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: The 2026 State of OSPOs and Open Source Management

Linux Foundation, Tuesday, October 6th, 2026

LF Research finds OSPOs are maturing and increasingly taking on AI governance and model evaluation.

The 2026 State of OSPOs report from LF Research and the TODO Group finds open source program offices becoming permanent corporate functions, with 57% in the same organizational home for two to three years and 53% of large enterprises having a formally structured OSPO.

Asia-Pacific leads expansion, with 20% of organizations planning an OSPO, double the rate in the Americas and Europe.

AI governance is becoming a core role, as 79% of OSPOs involved in it help with policy, evaluation of open models and datasets, risk management and legal review, and 85% are brought in at or before technology selection.
