Private AI Won't Be the Center of Your AI Universe. Hybrid Will.

The CTO Advisor, Friday, October 9th, 2026

Keith Townsend argues private AI won't displace frontier model APIs; like private cloud, it will succeed as part of a hybrid model.

The CTO Advisor's Keith Townsend follows up his claim that private cloud 'lost' by applying the same logic to private AI, which he calls a fool's errand when the ambition is to displace OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI by serving models from your own data center.

Private cloud platforms like Nutanix, VMware, Red Hat and OpenStack succeed commercially but are consumed for steady-state workloads that increasingly lean on public cloud services.

He expects AI to follow the same bifurcation, with hybrid AI combining on-premises and public cloud capabilities becoming the dominant enterprise model.
