When Is AI Work Really Done? CIOs Need a Clearer Finish Line
TechTarget, Wednesday, October 7th, 2026
AI 'done' can mean task, workflow or business outcome; CIOs must stop confusing them when judging AI productivity and value.
TechTarget's James Alan Miller argues that 'done' means three things for AI: the task an agent completes, the workflow that is checked and recorded, and the business result such as a resolved customer issue.
All three are legitimate finish lines, but trouble starts when one is mistaken for another, since enterprises use them to judge AI productivity, cost, safety and value.
Citing OneDigital, where AI coworkers handle about 30% of work across 20+ roles, he notes that freed capacity is not the end result and CIOs must define which finish line they are measuring.
