What's New in Security for Ubuntu 26.10?

Ubuntu, Tuesday, October 6th, 2026

Ubuntu 26.10 adds a slimmed signed GRUB, Rust coreutils, OpenSSL 4.0 and TPM-backed encryption, among other security changes.

Canonical outlines security changes in Ubuntu 26.10 'Stonking Stingray', focused on reducing attack surface and replacing memory-unsafe code with a signed, slimmed-down GRUB, TPM-backed encryption without a hardware root of trust and core utilities entirely in Rust.

The release ships OpenSSL 4.0, OpenSSH 10.5, certificate revocation with upki, dbus-broker as default with AppArmor mediation, and Linux 7.3.

It also adds authd support for Microsoft MFA and the Myna dictation feature, which runs speech recognition locally in a sandboxed snap.
