Task-Oriented and Goal-Oriented Agents Carry Different Security Risks
Proofpoint, Wednesday, October 7th, 2026
Proofpoint contrasts the security risks of task-oriented and autonomous goal-oriented AI agents.
Proofpoint distinguishes task-oriented agents, which are user-directed with limited execution, from goal-oriented agents that autonomously choose tools and steps.
Both inherit application risks, such as the March 2026 LiteLLM PyPI package compromise, and neither can be governed by RBAC or CASB intent checks alone, with OWASP-defined excessive agency as the key differentiator, illustrated by incidents such as a coding agent deleting a database volume.
Proofpoint recommends runtime controls that capture user intent and verify each action against it, with deeper controls for goal-oriented agents.
