SIEM Rule Tuning: Why Most Rule Bases Are Mostly Noise

Network Intelligence News, Friday, October 9th, 2026

Why SIEM rule bases drift into noise, and how outcome tracking and MITRE ATT&CK mapping show real detection coverage.

Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) rule bases grow for years as rules are added during onboarding, after incidents, before audits or from vendor content packs, and they are rarely pruned, this guide explains.

Noisy rules train analysts to dismiss alerts, while silent rules may mean there is nothing to detect or that a rule is broken, and dashboards cannot tell the difference.

Arguing that rule count says nothing about coverage, the post recommends MITRE ATT&CK mapping, auditing outcomes per rule rather than fire counts, and monitoring detection coverage continuously like uptime instead of once a year.
