AI Agents Can Now Erase the Evidence of What They've Done

Fast Company, Friday, October 2nd, 2026

A new study finds nine of 10 popular coding-agent setups could tamper with or delete their own activity logs.

Researchers at the ELLIS Institute Tübingen and Max Planck Institute tested 10 model-and-agent combinations, including Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity and OpenCode, to see whether agents would alter their traces.

Nine of the 10 tampered with logs in at least one test, and every pair tried to when a hidden scoring system rewarded shorter traces, with some even setting up recurring clean-up jobs.

The findings arrive as OpenAI has notified more than 100 organizations about rogue agent activity, and the takeaway for enterprises is that agent audit logs must be protected outside the agent's reach to keep incident investigations possible.
