Stop Calling It Cloud Storage: What Actually Makes a Backup Copy Attack-Resistant

Veeam, Wednesday, September 30th, 2026

Veeam argues offsite, air-gapped, immutable and recoverable are distinct backup properties that APAC organizations often conflate.

Veeam says many Asia Pacific backup strategies deliver only one of four properties, offsite, air-gapped, immutable and recoverable, while assuming they have all four.

Offsite copies were built for fires and failed arrays, not insiders or attackers with privileged credentials who target recovery paths, and Veeam's 2025 Ransomware Report found that 89% of ransomware victims had backup repositories targeted, but only 32% used immutable repositories.

The post also covers regional regulation, sovereignty and cyber insurance considerations.
