The OME-Zarr S3 Trap: Why Native NFS Ingest Is Faster
TrueNAS, Thursday, October 1st, 2026
TrueNAS shows why local OME-Zarr microscopy ingest is faster over native NFS than through S3FS translation layers.
TrueNAS explains that labs often assume high-throughput OME-Zarr microscopy pipelines must use S3 end to end, which bottlenecks local ingest.
Using the OME-Zarr library's S3 interface locally runs S3FS to emulate a file system on object storage, converting POSIX calls into S3 requests and back to POSIX on the storage side.
TrueNAS recommends native NFS for microscope ingest, then using Cloud Sync to push data to the cloud.
