Test Creation Was Never the Bottleneck

DevOps.com, Wednesday, September 9th, 2026

AI made code and test generation cheap, but verification and judgment stayed expensive, shifting the delivery bottleneck to review.

Survey data shows AI-assisted code made up 42% of commits in 2026, and 85% of developers in GitLab's report say AI moved the bottleneck to reviewing and validating code.

PractiTest found testing teams mostly use AI for test case creation (69.6%) rather than risk identification (19.9%), automating the cheap part while judgment work lags.

Sonar found 96% of developers do not fully trust AI code, yet only 48% always verify it. The author argues verification capacity is a staffing decision and recommends measuring rework and time to trace AI code in incidents.
