A New Deep Learning Model Maps Global Methane Emissions From Space

Google, Wednesday, September 9th, 2026

Google and NASA JPL built an AI model to detect and quantify methane emissions from satellite imagery.

Google Research and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory built a deep learning model that identifies and quantifies methane emissions globally from satellite imagery.

Methane detection from orbit is technically difficult because plumes are faint and easily confused with surface features, which has limited previous approaches to large point sources.

Automated detection at scale changes what is measurable for regulators and operators. For enterprises with emissions reporting obligations, independent satellite-derived measurement is a development worth tracking, since it makes self-reported figures externally checkable.
