Canonical introduces Data Mesh, aimed at the gap between documented governance policy and how data platforms actually operate.
Data governance is easy to describe and much harder to operate, Canonical argues: most organizations can define ownership, document policies and agree data should be findable and trustworthy, but the difficulty starts when those ideas have to work across real systems.
The post lists the symptoms, including pipelines running successfully with no known owner, dashboards answering important questions with unclear lineage, and query engines providing broad access with inconsistent policy enforcement.
Each individual tool may work while the overall platform stays hard to understand, operate and govern.
Canonical Data Mesh is presented as its answer to scaling governance across that reality.
