Governance beyond Security: Knowledge, Context and Ontology on the Lakehouse

Databricks argues governance artifacts are enterprise semantics, making Unity Catalog a runtime for AI agents.
Databricks reframes governance artifacts most teams treat as compliance overhead -- classification tags, de-identification policies, data contracts, model cards and lineage -- as the raw material of enterprise data semantics.
In that view the audit work an organization already does becomes the foundation for AI, and Unity Catalog becomes the runtime that agents query for meaning and context. The post describes a catalog-centered agentic lifecycle in which agents build, test, de-identify and deploy from curated metadata, with shared human gates certifying both the data product and the agent.
Because meaning lives in the catalog rather than in expensive LLM tokens, cheaper models can serve most needs with more trust, and production PHI never leaves the governed boundary.
