Your Agent Trusts Things You Never Approved

Cisco, Thursday, September 3rd, 2026

Cisco maps supply chain compromise patterns onto AI agents, which inherit trust in packages, build tools and base images nobody vetted.

Cisco observes that notable breach retrospectives of the last decade share a shape: the attacker did not break down the front door, but compromised something the target had already decided to trust, such as a package, a build tool or a base image, and walked in.

The post extends that pattern to AI agents, which inherit and act on trust relationships their operators never explicitly approved. Every tool, dependency and data source an agent can reach becomes part of its effective trust boundary.

Cisco argues teams need to enumerate and govern that inherited trust rather than assume the agent's sandbox contains it.
