Managed PostgreSQL vs. Self-Hosted PostgreSQL: Key Benefits and Trade-Offs

Microsoft, Thursday, August 27th, 2026

Microsoft compares managed and self-hosted PostgreSQL across cost, control, security, resilience, scalability and operational effort.

Microsoft's Azure blog compares managed PostgreSQL against self-hosted PostgreSQL across six dimensions: cost, control, security, resilience, scalability and operational effort.

Rather than declaring one option superior, the post lays out where each approach wins, since the right answer depends on team capacity and workload characteristics.

Self-hosting offers maximum control over configuration and version but transfers patching, backup verification, failover and scaling work to the team. Managed services take on that operational burden at the cost of some flexibility.

The post is aimed at teams making or revisiting that decision.
