IBM announced it has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, a research and development institution whose expertise spans quantum computing, quantum sensing, advanced communications, electronics, manufacturing and materials science.
IBM frames the combination as bringing together complementary expertise to accelerate future innovation across those fields.
The materials science and manufacturing capability is significant for quantum specifically, since progress there depends as much on fabrication and device physics as on algorithms. The transaction closing follows the earlier announcement of the agreement.
