The Culture Funnel: You Can't Align What Isn't in the Data

Cohere, Wednesday, August 19th, 2026

Cohere argues cultural awareness must be built into AI models from the start, because language coverage alone fails users.

Cohere argues that cultural awareness has to be built into AI systems from the start rather than added through alignment at the end. The post introduces the idea of a culture funnel: what gets lost between the world's cultural variety and what actually appears in training data.

Broad language coverage alone fails users around the world, because a model can speak a language while missing the context, norms and references that make its output usable.

Alignment cannot correct for material that was never represented in the data. Cohere positions the argument as central to building models that work outside the contexts that dominate web-scale corpora.
