AWS Lambda Now Supports Java 8, 11, and 17 on Amazon Linux 2023

AWS, Friday, July 31st, 2026

Lambda adds AL2023 runtimes for older Java versions so customers can decouple OS and language upgrades.

AWS Lambda now supports Java 8, Java 11, and Java 17 runtimes on Amazon Linux 2023, available as both managed runtimes and container base images. Customers running functions on those Java versions can migrate from Amazon Linux 2 to AL2023 without simultaneously upgrading their Java version.

That decoupling matters because AL2 support timelines were forcing two migrations at once for teams on older Java.

The container base images give the same option for image-packaged functions. It is a migration-path change rather than a new capability.
