Thinking Outside the Black Box: Defenders Need Open Source AI

Akamai Technologies, Thursday, July 30th, 2026

Akamai argues open source AI is essential for cybersecurity as it joins the Open Secure AI Alliance.

Akamai makes the case that defenders cannot rely on closed, opaque models for security work, because auditability and reproducibility are prerequisites for trusting a detection decision.

The post frames open source AI as necessary infrastructure for an open, distributed defense stack rather than an ideological preference. Akamai has joined the Open Secure AI Alliance to work on that stack alongside other vendors.

The argument extends to model provenance, weights availability, and the ability to run models inside a defender's own boundary. Akamai positions the alliance as an attempt to keep security tooling from consolidating behind a handful of hosted providers.
